Upcoming UN Day for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (26th September)

This Friday, join our call for a safer, more peaceful world as we celebrate the UN Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The world is as much at risk from nuclear weapons as it ever has been, with nuclear powers making irresponsible and escalatory threats and military violence proliferating around the globe.

But even in these concerning times, it is essential to remember that there are around 12,000 nuclear warheads today down from over 70,000 at the peak of the Cold War. That’s still 12,000 too many, but along with the 2017 UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), recent history gives precedent that mass nuclear disarmament is possible.

The continued, urgent need to pursue global disarmament motivated the UN to establish the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons in 2013.

There are various actions you can take to help support the message of global disarmament on Friday 26th of September. We are asking our supporters and members to participate in the Peace is in Our Hands social media action (instructions in link) this Friday, by simply sharing the attached image below or a portrait of themselves with the peace logo superimposed on their palms!

The official Nuclear Abolition Day website also recommends posting on social media using the #NuclearAbolitionDay hashtag and handle @youthfusion. Make sure you also tag @ScottishCND so we can reshare your post!
