The Nuclear Threat and What You Can Do About It

Responding to Arguments Against Nuclear Disarmament

Do you think a nuclear-weapons-free world is possible?

We hear these arguments all the time:

“The genie is out of the bottle!”

“It isn’t logistically possible”

“What about China/Russia/North Korea etc.?”

“We need nuclear weapons for deterrence!”

And on it goes.

At our annual general meeting last weekend, we heard some answers from Melissa Parke. As executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, she explained what the nuclear threat really means in today’s modern age. In particular, how the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is a big part of the solution.

Spoiler: Scotland has a unique part to play.

She also shed light on rising tension between nuclear-armed states, in the context of the recent US election, and how congress are responding.

You can hear all about it at the link below:

Divesting from Nuclear Weapons

Another part of the solution is divestment. That is to say, individuals contacting financial institutions to ask them to stop investing in nuclear weapons. This also came up in one of our AGM resolutions, so it will be a big part of our campaigning over the few months.

The UK spent £6.5 billion on nuclear weapons last year.

This cannot continue.

Gathering for change

We are responding by holding a special gathering in the Spring of 2025. It’s a chance to analyse the true cost of nuclear weapons – to public services, to the environment, and, ultimately, to humanity.

We wish we didn’t have to exist, but we do. And we are funded not by businesses with ulterior motives, but by you.

Because you believe in an alternative to war-mongering politics.

That is why we have decided to put our annual Christmas fundraiser towards the venue, which will cost £1500.

Donate today, to create a nuclear-free tomorrow.
