Nuclear weapons do not keep Scotland safe – quite the contrary, they are a major and intensifying security liability in an era of climate disaster, as this newsletter will argue.
Register now for the major SCND conference on Saturday 1st of November in Glasgow, and help us build the movement in support of a safer Scotland, free of nuclear weapons.
TODAY we make our first official announcement of speakers (see below), with even more to be confirmed!
Civil society and activist groups have been warning our government for years, coming on decades, that climate change poses an immense national security threat to the UK.
Interestingly, the UK intelligence establishment agrees. A bombshell article in The Guardian this week shows that a major and urgent defence intelligence report that highlighted the imminent risks to UK security posed by climate change was due to be announced yesterday.
Sources told the newspaper they believed the report’s publication had been stalled by Downing Street out of fear of its political implications.
It is obvious that there are massive security risks associated with a collapsing climate. Yet successive UK governments have been utterly complacent in making a national plan for addressing food or water shortages and more frequent extreme weather such as flooding which may affect cities acutely.
Instead of orienting towards these very real and imminent threats to Britain, the UK government has committed to an immense waste of public resources on nuclear weapons.
How can omnicidal weapons possibly defend our country from crop failures, supply chain shocks, flash floods and intensifying Atlantic storms? Indeed, nuclear weapons are a massive liability in each case by diverting the desperately needed financial, logistical and human resources away from these major and impending security challenges.
Unlike the nuclear-hawks, we will take these environmental and security threats seriously at our November 1st conference: “Stop the Nuclear Nightmare: Build Scotland for People and Peace”
We are delighted to announce that amongst the several great speakers we have lined up are Rochana Sheward, Director of Friends of the Earth Scotland, and Ross Greer MSP, new co-leader of the Scottish Greens.
Rochana and Ross will be among those highlighting the way nukes are already worsening the damage caused to our planet through nuclear waste and leaks, as well as the incalculable and irreparable catastrophe their use would be.
Don’t miss your chance to sign up early – registration costs just £10 for a whole day’s worth of informative discussion and debate.
We look forward to seeing you in Glasgow on November 1st!
