The Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (SCND) has given strong support to the Scottish Government’s proposed constitution for an independent Scotland. This would include a legal ban on possessing or hosting nuclear weapons in Scotland. Together with Scotland’s ratification of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons this would be our major international contribution.
We are living through a time in which there is no agenda among the nuclear powers for any significant programme of reduction and control over the arms race. We are also living in a period of exceptional military technological change. This is accelerating the risk of nuclear war – and few members of the public are aware of what is happening.
Scotland has the highest concentration of nuclear fire-power in Western Europe just thirty miles from its biggest population centre. Nuclear weapons and climate change are two existential risks to human civilisation and to much of the natural world.
Let Scotland show leadership on both of these.
