As we continue our work for peace and nuclear disarmament, we wanted to share the upcoming events with you. From our AUKUS webinar next Thursday, to the day of action at Menwith Hill and our AGM in November, there are opportunities to learn, take part and connect with others in the movement. We also invite you to remember members of the peace movement we have lost this year.
AUKUS webinar – Thursday 24 September, 5pm (UK time)
There’s still time to register for our upcoming webinar, AUKUS: Dimensions of a Dubious Submarine Deal, hosted jointly by Scottish CND and UK CND.
The webinar will explore the political contradictions, environmental impacts, proliferation risks and security concerns surrounding the AUKUS deal, in which the UK is playing a major role.
It will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the international resistance to the militarisation of nuclear technology, a movement that we are part of here in Scotland.
Day of action at Menwith Hill – 24 October, 12pm–4.30pm
Shut Down US Bases: Kick Out Trump’s Spy Station
Join UK CND, Yorkshire CND and the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign for a day of action as part of the campaign to shut down US bases in the UK.
The demonstration at Menwith Hill is an opportunity for campaigners from across the UK to come together and highlight concerns about the role of US military bases in Britain.

Remembering members of our peace movement
Are you aware of a Scottish CND member or peace-movement activist who stood with us and has passed away this year?
At our AGM, should we display the names of those we know that we have lost, with thanks and reflection?
At our Faslane rally in March this year, Scottish CND officers were very aware of the absence of Brian Quail, who had passed away in February. Brian took on many roles for Scottish CND over his years, as well as remaining involved in Pax Christi and other organisations. He was a relentless campaigner, famous for his letters to the press and many direct actions, including lying in front of, and underneath, a nuclear convoy.
In Edinburgh in May, I was shocked, along with members of Protest in Harmony, peace, justice and Palestine solidarity groups, by the loss of Portobello-based Gareloch Horticulturalist affinity group member Sheila Mackay. Sheila and her partner Margaret were part of numerous imaginative actions in and beyond our shores over many years. She thought globally and acted locally, but her ‘local’ often extended to Faslane and occasionally further afield to give solidarity by joining somebody else’s troubled local.
