As we gear up for our major upcoming conference on Saturday 1st November, we are very excited to announce our guest panels, which will address the core themes of our conference.
Nuclear weapons threaten Scotland in various ways. Not only are they a target on our backs, but the immense financial resources they command undermine economic prosperity, diverting from socially useful and environmentally sound investments.
Moreover, we have seen that nuclear posturing escalates international tensions rather than defusing them, so the argument that such weapons keep us safe and ensure international security is highly dubious.
To consider the various dimensions of the nuclear threat, we have organised our conference to include three panel sessions focused on the issues of Economy, Environment and Security.
Our first session of the day will focus on the economic drag that nuclear weapons create. We will hear from General Secretary of UK CND Sophie Bolt, MP for Alloa and Grangemouth Brian Leishman, RMT regional organiser Gordon Martin and Common Weal’s Head of Policy and Research, Craig Dalzell.
The following panel will focus on the environmental risks posed by nuclear weapons to Scotland, not only in terms of their catastrophic potential use but also day-to-day radiation risks and nuclear convoys. We’ll welcome Co-Leader of Scottish Greens Ross Greer, Rochana Sheward of Friends of the Earth Scotland, former SNP MP Deidre Brock and long-time Scottish campaigner and journalist Jonathon Shafi.
Tickets are now selling quickly, so don’t miss your opportunity and register now to join Scottish CND at this informative and galvanising conference.
The UK government’s plans for a war economy will bake in years more national decline and make the world more unsafe. Join our movement to demand an alternative future for Scotland!
In peace,
Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
