This is an opportunity to hear directly from the major parties contesting the Holyrood elections in May on their prospectus for Scotland’s economy, environment and security.
The hustings is co-sponsored by the following civic organisations:
Campaign Against the Arms Trade Scotland, CommonWeal, Don’t Bank on the Bomb Scotland, Edinburgh Climate Coalition, Gareloch Horties, Medact Scotland, Pax Christi Scotland, Peace and Justice, Poverty Alliance, Quakers for Peace, Scottish Peace Network, Scottish Trade Union Peace Network, SCRAM (Scottish Campaign Against the Atomic Menace), Secure Scotland, Stop the War Scotland, Trident Ploughshares, UN House Scotland, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Scotland.
Secondly, we would like to thank the many supporters that travelled out to Faslane last Saturday to participate in our successful demonstration!
We filled two buses with demonstrators from Edinburgh and Glasgow, with a third joining us from Aberdeen and many supporters travelling independently.
Around 130 demonstrators stood outside the North Gate of HMNB Clyde and heard statements by speakers representing a range of campaign groups from across Scotland and beyond.
We were pleased to hear from Pax Christi Scotland, Friends of the Earth Scotland, Veterans for Peace, UK CND, Stop the War Scotland, Scottish Greens, Secure Scotland and International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Our speakers made compelling moral, economic and security-oriented arguments against the stationing of nuclear weapons in Scotland, and drew attention to the disasters of the worldwide nuclear regime.
Attendees at the demonstration also enjoyed speeches from Bishop Brian McGee of Argyll and the Isles, as well as the author Ron Culley who gave a moving tribute to the late great Brian Quail. Brian was a legend of the Scottish peace movement and would most certainly have made every effort to join our demonstration last Saturday.
Thanks to Scottish Indy Podcasters, you can now watch the rally portion of the event, including all speeches, on YouTube through the panel below!
After the rally, we drove up the nearby Glen Fruin to a viewpoint, from which demonstrators could better see the naval base, its various facilities and location in the surrounding landscape.
We were grateful for the support of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, who sent an officer from Geneva to support and promote our demonstration.
At this time of international instability and escalating nuclear risk, during which our government continues to undermining international law by participating in disastrous US military misadventures, it is essential that Scotland’s anti-nuclear movement maintains a presence outside Faslane.
Thanks for the support of the SCND community last week, and please continue to support our campaigning going forwards!
