The UK government’s programme of nuclear militarism will make the world less safe, and our society less prosperous.
We want a better future for Scotland – one where we build for true security through peace and prepare our country for the real challenges of the 21st century.
Join SCND on Saturday 1st November at the Adelaide Baptist Church in Glasgow for our conference setting out a positive vision for a nuclear-free Scotland.
UK government spending on nuclear weapons is spiralling out of control. The nuclear bill piles ever higher with plans for new submarines, more warheads and US nuclear-capable fighter jets. The US has stationed nuclear weapons in the UK for the first time in 17 years, and European leaders are planning a continent-wide rearmament drive.
But despite all this, the false logic of nuclear militarism is increasingly revealed as what it is: an absurdity that is both dangerous and wasteful.
Most of the world’s nuclear powers have been involved in violent conflict in 2025, sometimes with one another. “Nuclear deterrence” is a sham that obscures the aggression of these nuclear states. This new era of global conflict reminds us that nuclear weapons have always failed to ensure international security – in fact, they make the world less safe by repeatedly raising the threat of apocalyptic nuclear war.
Nuclear militarism is being promoted as an opportunity for economic renewal. But building nuclear weapons is a feeble industrial plan – because they contribute nothing to society, unlike quality homes, hospitals, well-funded schools and a robust care system. And meanwhile, the UK government is cutting social spending to accommodate climbing nuclear costs, condemning our society to years more economic decline.
Meanwhile, living standards decline across the country, lives are lost to deprivation and the environmental crisis advances at alarming pace.

Building nuclear weapons will not solve any of society’s problems. We are calling for a different vision for Scotland’s future, which invests in peace and prosperity, not nuclear militarism.
Join us and the Scottish peace movement in Glasgow on Saturday 1st of November for a conference hosting expert guests from across civil society to challenge the nuclear nightmare:
