Major Demonstration in Glasgow Tomorrow (Saturday 11th April)

This week, the US President threatened to end Iranian civilisation.

He was able to make this barely-veiled warning of nuclear annihilation because we exist in a world which, shockingly, accepts certain leaders having the power to threaten the end of civilised life with nuclear weapons.

Trump’s threat was thankfully not carried out, and a tenuous (and already violated) ceasefire was announced on the same day.

But even as the world breathes a collective sigh of relief, the peace and anti-war movements must make it clear that these threats can be neither normalised or tolerated.

That is why Scottish CND is joining numerous other civic organisations at tomorrow’s major demonstration against Trump’s war on Iran and Israel’s war crimes in Lebanon and Gaza.

We are living in a time where our leaders hold outrageous disregard for human life. The inability of our Prime Minister to condemn either Trump’s genocidal threats or actual acts of genocide by Israel should be a shock to UK society.

It must also be a wakeup call: if we cannot mobilise our society to oppose these crimes, and propose justice to repair them, then we are accepting a world with no law except that “might makes right”. If we accept such a world, then there is no reason why the horrific violence we are witnessing abroad will not somehow find its way to our own societies.

The UK’s participation in the Iran war has been extensive. US bombing raids on Iran have taken off directly from British soil at RAF Fairford in Gloucester, and the RAF bases Lakenheath and Mildenhall have helped transit well over 100 fighter jets and other US air forces to the Middle East since January 2026.

There is therefore a strong case that US military use of British bases and airports has been indispensable in the preparations for and prosecution of the illegal war on Iran.

An alternative is possible. Some major European nations, including Spain, Italy and France, have taken stronger stances against the war and even restricted the use of their bases, airports and airspace by the US military. The UK and Scotland does not need to remain implicated in disastrous US wars that only cause untold suffering and harm our own economies.

So rally with us tomorrow, from 11am at McLennan Arch in Glasgow Green, to make it known that the UK’s support for this war is unacceptable to people in Scotland.

Lastly, don’t forget to register free for our upcoming webinar on nuclear power, which will take place at 7pm on Thursday 23rd of March. We will be hosting energy experts Pete Roche and Linda Pentz-Gunter, as well as campaigners from People Against Wylfa B, to hear their informed case against nuclear power.
