SEVERAL Autumn campaign events from Scottish CND

Dear Friend of SCND,
Summary of upcoming Autumn events:

We believe a majority of people in Scotland are dissatisfied with the direction that the UK government is taking our society.

We have witnessed public services suffer over a decade of under-investment. We see virtually unlimited funding committed to militarism and the nuclear industries, while the government cuts social safety provisions to accommodate these massive costs. Meanwhile, the world becomes a more dangerous place as “deterrence” doctrine undermines peace and world leaders brandish dangerous nuclear threats.

We say this is unacceptable, and demand a better future for Scotland.

That’s why we are rallying on Saturday 1st November in Glasgow, gathering a multitude of voices from across Scottish society to make the case against nuclear militarism and set out a positive vision for a nuclear-free Scotland. Register now and be part of the movement for change that Scotland needs!

As we have seen from recent reporting of radiation risk incidents at Faslane and Coulport, nuclear weapons don’t just risk catastrophic nuclear war but cause everyday harms, and have been causing immense harm around the world since 1945.

Over 2000 nuclear bombs have been exploded since 1945 in the disastrous worldwide ‘testing’ regimes of nuclear states. On Thursday 9th of October, we welcome Qazaqstani activist and filmmaker Aigerim Seitenova for a special online screening of her remarkable film “JARA: Radioactive Patriarchy”. Seitenova’s film concentrates on the struggles of Qazaqstani women for reparations and justice after the detonation of over 450 nuclear bombs by the USSR on Qazaq land. We will also discuss the legacy of British nuclear testing, in Australia and the Pacific region.

You can register free for the online webinar now!

We’re also pleased to announce our AGM will take place on Saturday 15th of November at the Renfield Centre in Glasgow. We will host a fantastic lineup of guest speakers at the AGM, including Florian Eblenkamp of ICAN, Professor Karen Bell who co-authored CND’s alternative defence review, investigative journalist Rob Edwards of The Ferret, and co-editor of Declassified UK, Laura Pidcock.

The meeting will be hybrid and upon registering you will have the option to choose to attend in-person or online. We encourage those members who can to attend in person, as catering will be provided and discussions will benefit from a strong attendance!

In advance of our AGM on 15th November, we have organised a Pre-AGM campaign agenda-setting meeting for members, which is an opportunity to collaboratively discuss the orientation of our campaign and provide input to the staff and executive committee. The Pre-AGM meeting will focus on discussing –

the SCND Framing Statement written by our Chair, establishing the priorities of our campaign and informing the agenda for the AGM in November.

Finally, SCND will be joining Stop the War in Edinburgh on Saturday 6th of September to oppose the country-wide prosecution of those peacefully protesting government policy. Look out for the Scottish CND banner and join us!
