2025 will be another important year for the peace movement in Scotland…
Many of us will have been lucky enough to spend Christmas and the holiday season with family and friends.
As we gather with loved ones from different parts of the country and the world, it might help us appreciate our holidays even more to reflect on the millions around the world who are not so fortunate as ourselves.
War, sadly, is tearing families and communities apart across the world, from Ukraine to Sudan to Palestine. And far too frequently, the nuclear threat has reared its ugly head during the course of these events. It is a great indictment of the world’s leaders that they have allowed this threat to become normalised again in the 21st century.
At such times, we should value the moments we spend with family and friends all the more. It is the these relationships and the closeness of our wider communities that should strengthen our resolve in the struggle for a more peaceful world.
As this challenging year draws to a close, it is also worth looking forward in the spirit of resilient optimism. 2025 is set to be an important year for the CND, with several significant events already in the calendar.
The third anniversary of the Ukraine war will come in February, with the horrific consequences of Russia’s illegal invasion still being felt to this day. As in previous years, SCND will be joining other peace campaigns to raise funds in support of Ukrainians. The third Meeting of the State Parties on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is scheduled for March, and with it the hope of gathering yet more momentum in the global movement to ban nuclear weapons. And later in the year, in August, the momentous 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagaski bombings will take place.
Be sure to keep following SCND’s social media and our regular newsletter to keep in the loop with all these significant events and the progress of the growing Scottish peace movement!
