| Promoting a Scottish Peace Day | |||
The United Nations established an International Day of Peace which is marked on 21st September each year. Scotland's for Peace has been holding events in Scotland each year to mark this date. Peaceoneday promotes a global ceasefire day on International Peace Day each year and is particularly calling for a truce on 21st September 2012. On 21 September 2011 Scotland's for Peace, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) held a conference in the Scottish Parliament with speakers from Sweden, Ireland, England and Scotland. On 17 September 2011 Scottish CND organised the Paint for Peace competition for children and the Make Peace Festival, where people came together to form a human peace/CND symbol in the centre of Glasgow for the International Day of Peace (video). On 21 September 2010 Scotland's for Peace and the Cross Party Group on Nuclear Disarmament held a conference in the Scottish Parliament with the title "Join the global campaign to abolish nuclear weapons - Scotland can !" . Speakers included Alyn Ware (Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non Proliferation and Disarmament) and Marian Hobbs (fomer New Zealand Defence Minister). Leaflet Video On 21 September 2009 Scotland's for Peace and the Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre launched an initiative to encourage Scottish local authorities to join Mayors for Peace. In 2006 Scotland's Long Walk for Peace arrived at the Scottish Parliament two days before the Day of Peace. In 2005 The Scotland’s for Peace forum was held close to the Day of Peace. |
