"I am completely committed to ridding Scotland of nuclear weapons, as is my party. Nuclear weapons are immoral, illegal and, at a time of financial restraint, they represent an obscene waste of money.

"The Scottish Government has made very clear its opposition to the use, threat of use and possession of nuclear weapons and to the UK Government's commitment to replace the Trident system.

"This position reflects majority opinion in this country. Opinion polls have repeatedly shown that a majority of Scots are opposed to nuclear weapons. A majority of Scottish MPs voted against the replacement of Trident A majority of MPSs voted against the replacement of Trident.

"Yet, under the devolution settlement, the Scottish Parliament has no power to decide whether or not nuclear weapons are based in our territory.

"This reinforces the need for Scotland to become a normal independent nation with the power to take decisive action on matters like this, which affect us so closely."
