Trident debate 14 June 2007

Voted for motion which opposed Trident replacement

Mike Rumbles proposed the Lib Dem Amendment which added a phrase noting that defence was a reserved issue.

He gave a speech and said: "I cannot envisage any scenario in which use of the Trident missile system would be justified. I am at one with the many leaders of civic Scotland and our churches who have given a moral lead on the issue. "

Views on nuclear weapons:

Replied to survey in November 2006 saying he was opposed to upgrading or replacing Trident and said "I cannot envisage any situation where the use of strategic Nuclear Weapons could ever be justified. This is indeed a moral issue that transcends party politics and the government should not proceed with either the upgrading of the replacing of the Trident"

Replied to survey in June 2005 saying he opposed Trident replacement and said - "I cannot see any situation in which the UK government could in all sanity authorise the firing of Trident. So it’s ineffective, useless and a complete waste of money"
