May 2010 - Replied to letter from Scotland's for Peace: "While we accept that there is a case of a minimum nuclear deterrent, Liberal Democrats will not renew Trident on a like-for-like basis and will instead hold a Strategic Security and Defence Review to establish the best alternative for our security. Today's nuclear threat is not from a super-power standoff but from rogue regimes and terrorist groups and we will prioritise future spending on the threats of today and tomorrow, not the last century. "The current submarines have many years of service left to run and will not be decommissioned until the 2020s. That is why the Liberal Democrats argue that a decision on a replacement system need not be taken until 2014 and even later if the life of the system is further extended. Liberal Democrats will consider the best alternative as part of a defence and security review, and in the light of the outcome of major multilateral talks in May, the negotiations on the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty." 2009 - Signed EDM 660 calling for a delay in the Initial Gate of Trident Replacement. 14 March 2007 - Voted against the Government motion which called for the renewal of Trident November 2006 - Replied to survey asking if he was opposed to the upgrading or replacing of Trident as not decided and said "On balance I believe that it would best to invest elsewhere and that we do not need a replacement.
