Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace saying that he would vote against the replacement of Trident
"I voted against the renewal of Trident when the issue came to vote in the House of Commons and I will oppose any further plans to build a replacement for Trident"
2009 - Signed EDM 660 calling for a delay in the Initial Gate of Trident Replacement.
14 March 2007 - voted against the Government motion which called for the renewal of Trident
Spring 2007 - Told the Press and Journal that he had "real reservations" about Mr Blair's proposals. He welcomed the debate and said he would seek the views of his Constituency Labour Party and take them into account.
November 2006 - Replied to survey saying -
"I have not fully made up my mind yet. I must say initally that I am not ideologically opposed to the possession by the UK of a nuclear deterrent. Nuclear weapons have escaped from Pandora's Box and it will take more than unilateral disarmament by the UK to put them back. However, having said that I remain to be convinced that an equal deterrent cannot be provided using conventional weapons, especially in this era of guerrilla warfare and international terrisom.
2It should be pointed out that the UK has massively reduced our nuclear arsenal over the past 10 years and it is now at the minimal level required for detternce purposes. I thus await with interest the parliamentary, and indeed the public, debate about the future of our deterrence. As I said I am not definitively opposed to a nuclear deterrent but if it is proved that, for example, the nature of 21st century warfare makes nuclear weapons obsolete then I would not support a nuclear deterrent simply out of some sort of nationalist pride. However, as I said, I am yet to be persuaded either way. "
April 2006 replied to a letter saying
"we brought nuclear weapons into the world and it is probably up to us to have a deterrent that will protect those countries that would get nuclear weapons if it wasn't for our deterrent shield. However, nuclear abolition should be a long term goal of the global community . .. I would welcome a chance to discuss in Parliament the possible cost of different systems that would be available as well as discussing the possible costs of having no deterrent."
2005/06 - Supported EDM 2703 calling for a debate before a decision on Trident Replacement and EDMs 1113 and 1197 calling for a debate.
