April 2010 - Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace saying
"My position is the same as that of the present Labour Government and the Labour Party ,namely to support Multilateral disarmament of Nuclear weapons as being the best way forward for both the United Kingdom and the world . That this stance is justified is shown by the recent multilateral agreement between Russia and the USA that received the praise of CND as a positive step forward .Britains own contribution to this is that it has recently announced that it will build only three and not the four replacement Trident nuclear submarines previously planned .
The UK has already reduced the overall explosive power of its nuclear arsenal by 75% since the cold war . However the Government believe that maintaining Trident is still the right thing to do because there are real risks and trends that need to be considered .
*The number of countries with nuclear weapons continues to grow -with worrying recent developments with Iran and North Korea .
*Several of the countries who either have nuclear weapons or are trying to acquire them are in regions where instability may well increase .
*A countrys intentions can change quickly -more quickly than we can re -acquire our nuclear capability if we let it lapse .
However given recent developments we remain convinced that while we need to maintain our nuclear deterrent we can and will where possible take further steps to reduce its overall capacity . President Obama has taken a clear lead in this field ,which is much welcomed by all in the international community .
Without this contribution to our long term security all the gains made by our democracy in terms of the NHS, Education and support to developing nations for example is put at risk .This is why the only way forward that is in the interests of us all is to pursue a multilateral approach in conjunction with the United Nations ."
