How close can you get to a nuclear bomb?

The effects at 1.5 to 3km   The effects at 3 to 5km   The effects at 5 to 8km

At 0 to 1.5km

The intense heat from the nuclear explosion would melt asphalt in the street, burn paint off walls and melt metal. Most buildings would be totally destroyed. Any that remained partially standing would only be shells with their contents entirely burnt. In addition to the lethal effects of heat and blast within this killing zone, the levels of gamma radiation would also be fatal.

This dead zone would be an area of 7 square kms.
