No Place for Trident

The referendum on 18 September is a vote on Scottish independence, but it will have a major impact on nuclear disarmament. It is likely that a Yes vote will result in the removal of Trident from Scotland. This has been clearly stated by the leadership of the SNP. The proposal for a constitutional ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons will be welcomed and should ensure that there is no room for any deal that keeps Trident on the Clyde.

Relocating Trident would be so difficult that this is not a viable option. As a result, London is likely to decide that Trident should be scrapped, if Scotland becomes independent. So Scots have it within their power to make a major impact on the global problem of nuclear weapons.
