Nuclear Warhead fitter wanted at Coulport

A recruitment advert for a “craft fitter” at Coulport gives an insight into the work which is performed within the Top Secret facility which stores and handles Trident nuclear warheads on the shores of Loch Long.

The job description includes the following:

“Be constantly aware of the high risks and hazards associated with working in an explosives processing and storage environment”

Requirements:

“To perform all RBA processing operations”  RBA = Reentry Body Assembly = Trident nuclear warhead

The fitter is expected to be able to perform three roles – 

the reader who ensures that the correct steps are followed.

the first operator who undertakes the operation

the second operator who assist by preparing tools and equipment

“To perform Component (LLC) pack / unpack operations”.  LLC = Limited  Life Components. There are 3 LLCs in a Trident nuclear warhead: the Arming Fuzing and Firing System; the Neutron Generator; and the tritium Gas Transfer System.  These three parts are all manufactured in the United States. They need to be replaced after several years. Replacing these LLCs is a major part of the work undertaken at Coulport.

“To perform loading and unloading of trailers (RBAIT’s)” RBA = Reentry Body Assembly = Trident Warhead

“To conduct Service Unit Operations to support the programme as required”. Missile Service Units are large metal boxes which are placed over the submarine in order to remove nuclear warheads from Trident missiles.  This is carried out inside the Explosives Handling Jetty at Coulport.

“To comply with requirements that only one RBA is transferred to/from the work areas at any one time”

“Carry out Desiccant analysis” Desiccant is required to avoid moisture in the warhead and components. The desiccant become contaminated with radiation and should be treated as radioactive waste.

“Working knowledge of SWS Programme and working in a Nuclear or Weapons environment is preferable”  SWS – Strategic Weapon System = Trident

“Displays high levels of standards for values, behaviours and discipline” – How could anyone with high values work on nuclear weapons??

Key accountabilities Identify any areas of concern or serious shortcomings which affect operations to Line Manager  

•Ensure that all work is carried out in a safe, timely and economical manner

•Ensure adherence to the regulations laid down in Company and client Procedural Guides, Work Instructions and Safe Systems of work relevant to the work area

•Contribute to the achievement of team performance targets

•Comply with all safety, environmental, fire, security standards, regulations and legislation and highlight non-compliance to Line Manager

•Take responsibility and ownership for own and others Safety, Health and Environmental issues, ensuring compliance with company and legislative standards and highlighting any risks or concerns

•Undertake the duties of any other craft operators, appropriate to the grade, in any work area as required / directed

•Be constantly aware of the high risks and hazards associated with working in an explosives processing and storage environment and highlighting any risks or concerns Responsibilities To perform all RBA processing operations, within the required work areas, with due regard to Safety, Security, Quality and Efficiency, and in accordance with approved documentation

•During all processing activities the post holder will perform the duties of either:- the reader who controls the process being undertaken and ensures no deviation from approved procedures

•or the first operator who undertakes the operations required to accomplish the process

•or the second operator who assists the first operator and musters and prepares tools, equipment and materials required for the process

•To perform processing operations within secondary work areas in accordance with approved documentation

•To perform x-ray processing and maintenance operations

•To perform all processing operations, including installing and removing equipment to support asset movements and shore side operations within the Jetty areas during active states

•To perform Component (LLC) pack / unpack operations, utilising appropriate lifting equipment, test equipment and extraction equipment, within work areas as required

•To perform loading and unloading of trailers (RBAIT’s), using appropriate lifting and crane equipment, in accordance with all approved documentation

•To perform crane / slinger duties as required / directed

•To process flight hardware which includes testing, cleaning and inspecting, in accordance with approved documentation

•To perform routine and scheduled maintenance on Surface Support Equipment in accordance with approved documentation

•To carry out equipment modifications, when required in accordance with approved modification packages

•To perform Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) inspections on required equipment in accordance with approved procedures.

•To conduct Service Unit Operations to support the programme as required.

•To perform Facility Maintenance tasks as required

•To perform load testing, which includes utilisation of overhead pendant crane, appropriate lifting equipment and test equipment in accordance with approved procedures / documentation and completion of records detailing results and escalating where required

•To comply with all Company procedures related to Fire, Safety and Security where appropriate

•To comply with requirements that only one RBA is transferred to / from the work areas at any one time

•Carry out Desiccant Analysis (taking samples processing through machinery to identify levels of contamination) processing or levels of radiation in accordance with all approved documentation following work instructions

•To attend all periodic mandatory and on-the-job training, as directed

•Receive regular on the job training, competency and certification to ensure competency is maintained in order to perform the tasks required

•Work to all company security, health, safety, environment, fire and radiation safety standards and highlight any issues or concerns

•Follow all company and client MOD quality, performance and Compliance standards and procedures

•Committed to contributing to the work area being, safe, secure, and clean and an otherwise satisfactory working environment

•Individuals may be expected to undertake tasks in support of other teams and undertake any other duties deemed to be within the job holder’s capability and grade

•Maintain and promote high personal standards in Environment, Safety, Health, Security and Quality Qualifications Recognised craft apprenticeship (mechanical or electrical) or equivalent (SVQ level 3, ONC, Modern Apprenticeship or City & Guilds) Knowledge Proven knowledge in area of expertise e.g. electrical or mechanical field

•Working knowledge of SWS Programme and working in a Nuclear or Weapons environment is preferable 

•Knowledge of working on a restricted site or in a secure environment is preferable

•Nuclear Site Authorisation Conditions and managements systems is preferable

•Basic knowledge of working in a radiological environment is preferable

•Working knowledge of Clyde and company safety, quality and security procedures Experience Experienced mechanical fitter or electrician

•Previous experience of working and adhering to company procedures

•Experience of  working and adhering to legislative procedures

•Previous experience of working within a Ministry of Defence work environment is preferable

•Working in a manufacturing or processing environment is essential

•Previous experience of using forklifts and cranes is preferable however must be willing and able to undertake training and certification Skills Good interpersonal and communication skills
