Scottish Elections

What will I find on this page?

This page starts with Scottish CND's objectives for the Election: the issues that we hope all candidates will endorse, and that we are asking the next Scottish government and parliament to treat as a priority.

If you are a supporter of Scottish CND, we ask you to raise these issues with your candidates and to encourage them to take a stand in support of outlawing nuclear weapons.

If you scroll down further, you will find events and materials to support you in your campaigning. This includes:

If you are standing in this election and want to show your support for nuclear disarmament, we also have a range of graphics that you can use on your social media, which are available at the end of this page.

What do we stand for? Scottish CND is primarily a single issue campaign, with the aim of nuclear disarmament for the UK and the elimination of nuclear weapons from the world. We are not party political.

Our Campaign is waged in the context of the climate emergency and the toxic politics of racism and exploitation, exposing deep links between these and the existential threat of nuclear weapons. We reject claims to political leadership which are founded on a willingness to use weapons of mass destruction that could obliterate all human life.

We aim to ensure that theTreaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons – and the opportunity it gives Scotland to pursue nuclear disarmament at home and in the world – is high on the election agenda.

Our Campaign is of the view that Scotland can best take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and can most quickly disarm the UK's nuclear arsenal in Scotland, as an independent nation with full autonomy over its international commitments, its territory and its political priorities.

Nuclear weapons are a threat like none other to human survival. The majority of all Scottish people, of all political backgrounds, strongly oppose their existence and their presence on Scottish soil. We therefore call on the next Scottish Government to make an unambiguous and comprehensive commitment to nuclear disarmament.

We ask each candidate contesting the Scottish Election to:

·         Commit specifically to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to outlawing nuclear weapons; and

 ·         Commit to disarming the UK's nuclear arsenal in Scotland by the most direct route possible;

 And to:

 ·         Speak out publicly, and commit to sign the ICAN Parliamentarians' Pledge if they are elected.

Find out more below about how you can hold your candidates to account at this Election. Sign up for our events, download posters and leaflets, and access a range of briefings on important nuclear issues for Scotland.
