Other Local Group Events

The Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre have arranged a talk with Fr Bill Bichsel, SJ from Tacoma Washington one of the Disarm Now Plowshares group 21st December 4:45pm, St John's Church Hall on Disarming Trident: Nonviolent Direct Action in the US and Scotland followed by the Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre Solstice party. Bix will also be attending the Wednesday vigil at Faslane 4 - 5pm if you would like to join us.

Bix is founder of Guadalupe Catholic Worker House and one of the Disarm Now Plowshares  The five Catholics of the Disarm Now Plowshares group were arrested and imprisoned for entering the Bangor nuclear weapons base in Washington state and attempting, with ordinary household hammers to disarm the Trident nuclear weapons system there and thereby to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah. "Bix" is a wonderful, joyous, gentle spirit who lives the gospel everyday. He was over 80 at the time of arrest and was transported across the US through its harsh prison system and later was held in solitary confinement in extremely cold conditions. One of the five was Sr Anne Montgomery, also in her 80's at the time. She was one of the Plowshares Eight, the first group of 8 Catholics, including Dan and Phil Berrigan who entered a plant in Pennsylvania and actually disarmed a nuclear warhead. Sister Anne died this past year a few months after being released from prison.
