26. Ledaig, Barra. (NL 669 979)
The Racal-Decca transmitter station on Barra was the Master Station
of the Racal-Decca Hebridean system chain that was opened in 1976.
The two Scottish "slave" stations of the network were
in Kentra Moss (Loch Shiel), and on the Butt of Lewis. The chain
performed a dual-purpose role, airborne and submarine surveillance.
The station was closed in 2000, and the 330ft mast was dismantled
later that year, the Decca system having been superseded by Global
Positioning technology. Photographs of the Barra station are at
www.webhome.idirect.com/~jproc/hyperbolic/decca_henridean.html.
