Faslane 365 is the most audacious and ambitious event ever planned in the history of non-violent direct action against Trident. The plan is to blockade the base for a year, with a continuous series of blockades by groups of 100 or more people. This blockade will start on October 1st, 2006, with autonomous groups
taking responsibility for each two-day period. It won’t begin till there are enough people to keep it going for at least 100 days. Although the focus is clearly on Trident, these groups will use their days to emphasise their own priorities, be it social justice, human rights, environmental concerns, etc.

This is undoubtedly a hugely ambitious and bold initiative. It will demand courage and determination
to make it succeed. But when you consider the nature of what we are opposing, the unimaginable evil that is Trident, then you must ask yourself: How much do I feel is enough for me to do? And how much is “too much”?

We have already blockaded the base for a day or so; this is the logical extension of those previous efforts. As our action then was entirely justified, so is this campaign which develops from it. In truth, it is not a question of the number of days we blockade the base. Surely, the whole point - the very crux of the matter - is that a place like Faslane should not be allowed to exist at all in the first place. It should not be tolerated nor allowed to go about its vile work for any length of time. This is Scotland’s submarine superbelsen, an enormous death camp whose sole effective purpose is to burn and blast people in a scale beyond all human imagination, let alone my feeble powers of description. And it is here, up and running, right now.

Faslane 365 is happening at a time when the very fabric of international law is not only being ignored by the British state (as for years over Trident) but is now being pro-actively undermined - witness the moves by Defence Minister John Reid to water down the Geneva Conventions and the rubbishing of the Nuremberg Principles in the case of Flt Lt Malcolm Kendall-Smith. Faslane 365 is a great opportunity to make a stand against this insidious process, to say that enough is enough.

Whatever inconvenience we may cause to passing motorists (which will be minimal), whatever the demands made by us on the police force (which may be less than minimal), these fundamental facts should be kept firmly in mind; we are up against what Mohammed Bedjaoui, the President of the International Court of Justice has described with admiral brevity and clarity, as the “ultimate evil”. In simple Anglo Saxon, it is the worst thing in the world. And it is here right now, in our “back yard”.

As the Quaker, Gerard Winstanley, once wrote: ”Thoughts ran in me that words and writing were nothing.....for action is the essence of all and if thou dost not act, thou dost nothing.” So, here we are today with Trident. And, as the old saying goes, ”If not you, who? and if not now, when? It must also be borne in mind that this action is part of the larger ongoing campaign - not instead of it. So we will continue with our lobbying, letter-writing, parliamentary work etc. at the same time.

It is also significant that this action is taking place against the government’s clear intention not merely of continuing with Trident till the year 2020 (the end of its projected life time), but of replacing Trident with something newer, better - and more usable thereafter. This is in clear violation of Article VI of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, signed way back in 1968, which states: “Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.”

Since signing that agreement, the UK government has ”progressed” from Polaris to Trident, and intends to continue onwards and upwards with a replacement for Trident. A sickening illustration of the utter insincerity of the UK’s alleged commitment to nuclear disarmament.

Which is all the more reason for giving this blockade your active support. For this blockade there will be no big central organisation laying on transport, legal support, catering etc. It will be up to each group that participates to get itself organised. It’s not the sort of event where you can just turn up on the day - everyone needs to get involved in the planning and organisation. At the same time, there is a lot of support available to us from people who have done the Faslane thing and know the ropes, the legal issues, how you need to prepare, etc.

Groups from across Scotland and beyond are already forming groups to take on a two-day blockade and 18 groups have already chosen their dates.
F365 already has strong support from 85 organisations including Stop The War, Jubilee Scotland, the Quakers, the Scottish National Party, the Green Party, and CND. Why not add your support too?
