MOD simulates Trident convoy crash at Raith Interchange

Declassified reports show that the Ministry of Defence and emergency services would have major problems responding to an accident involving the transport of nuclear weapons across Scotland. Exercise Senator took place in 2011. It was held in Prestwick, but simulated an accident at the Raith Interchange on the M74 in Lanarkshire.West End Festival

Scottish CND had a lively presence at Glasgow's West End Festival parade. Our theme was "liberate the Clyde" and there were jellyfish, japanese fish kites, octopus, spinning whirlpools and a "recycle Trident" submarine.
Letter of Last Resort Radio Play

Radio 4 has broadcast a drama of "Letter of Last Resort" (iplayer). In the play a new Prime Minister discusses with her civil servant what she should write in the letter which is given to the Captain of each submarine, telling them whether or not to retaliate if Britain is destroyed in a nuclear attack. The adviser says - "without the irrational threat of retaliation there is no point having nuclear weapons at all". This is consistent with the Top Secret Duff Mason report (December 1978) which recognised that retaliation would be "an act of rage and revenge .... serving no rational purpose (page 5, page 6)

Trident poll by Lord Ashcroft

A new poll by Lord Ashcroft claims that only 34% of Scots want to give up nuclear weapons.
“The results contradict Scottish CND poll and other public research and the Coalition’s austerity drive is increasing opposition to replacing Trident as people think the money will be better spent elsewhere.” Arthur West - chairman of Scottish CND
Motion lodged in the Scottish Parliament - French Nuclear Missile Test Failure

Yesterday the French Navy tested a strategic missile of the new generation M51 (launched from the submarine "Le Triomphant"). The test was a failure and the missile was destroyed briefly after its launch.
