Call On UK Government To Meet Own WMD Commitments

SNP Defence spokesperson Angus Robertson MP has tabled a Motion calling on the Government to meet its international commitments to eradicating nuclear weapons in the world. His motion follows comments from this year\'s Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mohamed ElBaradei of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) who said that the World\'s Governments should work to make nuclear weapons as universally condemned as slavery or genocide. Commenting Mr Robertson said: \"Mr ElBaradei\'s comments in his acceptance speech give new impetus to the international campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons. His pointed remarks remind us that even those states which currently hold stockpiles of nuclear weapons are bound by International Treaty to rid the world of these weapons. \"The 1968 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons calls for complete disarmament. However it is a sad fact that this present Government appears to ignore that obligation and appears keener on wasting billions on a new generation of nuclear weapons. \"The SNP believe that the current stock of Weapons of Mass Destruction - based in Scotland - and any future plans should become as non-existent as those the Government said were in Iraq.\" MOTION - MOHAMED ELBARADEI AND ELIMINATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS This House congratulates Mohamed ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on winning the Nobel Peace Prize; agrees with his statement during his acceptance speech that the world should work to make nuclear weapons as universally condemned as slavery or genocide; and calls upon Her Majesty\'s Government to further that aim by meeting its responsibilities under Article VI of the 1968 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to advance quickly towards a Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.
