Designation of new British warhead project

Jeffrey Lewis has said on Arms Control Wonk that a new Aldermaston bomb would be called the "High Surety Warhead"

"I've learned that the British are now considering their own 'reliable replacement warhead' program ( with many of the same capabilities) as one option for Trident replacement, a warhead notionally called the 'High Surety Warhead'".

This title is highly plausible. Aldermaston will stress that the new warhead will be safer .  It is likely to be designed with an Insensitive High Explosive (IHE), such as EDC 35, rather than EDC 37, the High Explosive in the current British warhead.

The computer simulation effort is running several years behind the US project.  It is almost inconceivable that the UK could carry out simulated testing of a new design without extensive help from the US.  If RRW proceeds then the UK may be able to develop an equivalent UK version.  If RRW stalls then the UK project will also grind to a halt.
