MP awarded for anti-nuclear stance

left

Edinburgh MP Nigel Griffiths was presented with an award from two Nagasaki survivors for his stance against nuclear weapons.

On 9th August South Edinburgh MP Nigel Griffiths was presented with an award from Masahiko and Mitsugi Moriguchi from Nagasaki.  They were nine and seven years old in 1945 when their city was destroyed by the second atomic bomb.

Nigel Griffiths resigned from his position as deputy leader of the House of Commons in March because he was opposed to the Government's plan to renew the Trident nuclear weapon system.

The survivors also planted a tree at Gillies College in the Grange.  They poured water from the Nagasaki peace fountain over the tree
