Trident - It's not a done Deal

In March 2007 the Westminster Parliament voted to endorse the replacement of Britain’s Trident submarine fleet with over 160 MPs voting against. But this was only the first step - not parliament’s final word.

In March 2007 the Westminster Parliament voted to endorse the replacement of Britain’s Trident submarine fleet with over 160 MPs voting against. But this was only the first step - not parliament’s final word. The current phase is described as the concept phase. The next stage will be the Initial Gate. The Defence Minister has now said that the decision will be taken by the cabinet during parliamentary recess in September 2009. In the past, ministers promised that parliament would be able to debate and vote on the issue. This is particularly important now because of the growing financial crisis. Many MPs and others who may have supported Trident renewal 2 years ago will be having second thoughts about spending over £20 billion while people are losing their jobs and their homes with the prospect of deep cuts in public services in future years.

Postcard Campaign

Scotland’s for Peace has now organised a postcard campaign so that people can tell their MPs how
they think the money should be spent. A copy of the postcard (see left) should be enclosed with this magazine. Copies can obtained from the Office at 15 Barrland Street, Glasgow G41 1QH.

It will be an ideal campaigning tool for all types of anti-Trident groups, faith groups, trade unions and CND groups.
