US take over of Aldermaston

The majority share in the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), which makes all Britain's nuclear weapons, is now in American hands.

The majority share in the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), which makes all Britain's nuclear weapons, is now in American hands.  The British Government have sold their one third share in AWE Management Limited to Jacobs Engineering, a US Company.  The other two stakes are held by Lockheed Martin, the American manufacturers of Trident, and Serco, a British services group.

Kate Hudson chair of CND said:

"It is outrageous that control of Britain's so-called independent nuclear weapons are being handed over to American corporations. Not only does this increase the slice of the £76 billion to be spent on Trident that will go to the US, it more significantly gives the US Government even more strings to pull to control British foreign policy".

The news was revealed in the US business press and not in the House of Commons.  Westminster is about to close for the Christmas recess.
