Edinburgh calls for end to defence nuclear immunity

Currently all defence nuclear sites in Scotland are exempt from full regulation by safety agencies, such as SEPA. Following the MOD's gagging of the regulators over the radiation leak at the Trident prototype reactor at Dounreay in 2012, the Scottish Government today called for the removal of the MOD's immunity.

In response to the statement by Environment minister Richard Lochhead in the Scottish Parliament this afternoon, John Ainslie, Coordinator of Scottish CND said,

"We warmly welcome the proposal that crown immunity for defence nuclear sites should be lifted. The MOD's gagging of SEPA and the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) shows that the current arrangement is unsatisfactory and unsafe. SEPA and the ONR should be given full power to regulate defence nuclear sites in Scotland."
