US silence on W76 delays

left

A spokesman for the Y12 complex has refused to say any more about why completion of the upgrade of the W76 Trident warhead has been delayed.

"I simply can't say. I can't say anything more than I've already said. That is the God's truth.  What we've said is the limit of what we're going to discuss on this particular issue".

A spokesman for the Y12 complex has refused to say any more about why completion of the upgrade of the W76 Trident warhead has been delayed. Scottish CND has suggested that this could be linked to a new "Purification Facility".  This is required to process a "special material". This material is non-nuclear but its name remains a secret. The facility was built to support the W76 upgrade programme. Construction of the facility was behind schedule. It was completed in 2006.

Frank Munger of Knoxnews in Tennessee recently reported that the W76 programme at Y12 was behind schedule. When he raised the issue of the purificaiton plant with Steven Wyatt, a spokesman for Y12, his response was:

"I simply can't say. I can't say anything more than I've already said. That is the God's truth.  What we've said is the limit of what we're going to discuss on this particular issue".

The Y12 Oak Ridge facility produces the secondaries and radiation cases for all US nuclear weapons.  This involves processing Uranium, Lithium and other exotic materials.
