John Ainslie, co-ordinator Scottish CND

It is with great sadness that I bring you the news that John Ainslie, co-ordinator of Scottish CND for over 25 years, passed away earlier today, Friday 21st October.

John made a remarkable contribution to Scottish CND and the wider peace movement during his lifetime.

He produced outstanding reports which made the case against nuclear weapons in a way which carried authority and respect across the political spectrum.

John ran the Scottish CND office for many years and he was a tireless organiser of events and activities all aimed at making the case for a nuclear weapons free world.

Scottish CND and the wider peace movement have today lost a massively influential figure and friend who will be sadly missed.

We are immensely  grateful to John for his intellectual vigour, organisational and strategic skills, and sheer commitment he gave to our organisation over so many years.

Any condolences and messages of sympathy sent to the office will be collected and sent to John's family.

Funeral details will be publicised when arranged.

In Peace

Arthur West

Chair of  Scottish CND

Very saddened.

Well, we must all honour his memory by getting on with the business of eliminating nuclear weapons.

I would like to convey my sincere condolences to John Ainslie's family on their sad loss. Though I did not know John personally I have been impressed and inspired by reading about his conviction, commitment and great courage. His life was an example to us all, and his passing is a great loss to the peace movement and to our nation.

I've just this minute read of John's death. "Sad" is hardly adequate to cover what I feel. He has worked steadfastly and tirelessly deploying his many skills to great effect. Appointing John was the best decision which our Executive Committee made in my time as Chair. He will be greatly missed.
