First Day of the Spring Walk

The Spring Walk for Peace set of yesterday, April 1st from the Scottish Parliament.

Around 100 people attended the set off Rally and listened to words of encouragements and commitment from Public Health Minister Michael Matheson (SNP) Patrick Harvie MSP (Green Party) and Jean Urquhart MSP (Independent).

Other MSPs (SNP, Green and Labour) like: Bill Kidd, Marco Biagi, Fiona McLeod, Alison Johnstone, Mary Fee, Graeme Dey and Maureen Watt  joined the first steps of the one week long walk for nuclear disarmament.

We received various messages of encouragement from other MSPs like Christian Allard.

First Minister himself sent us a letter of encouragement and support as he could not join the Spring Walk.

Despite the wet and cold weather the procession continued up the Royal Mile and our spirits were lifted by Protest in Harmony choir and their songs.

Our journey continued and by 4 pm, more than 40 people reached Currie. Wet, cold, tired, but very determined. A hot soup awaited us and that was all we needed to warm up for the evening meeting.

The evening gathering was a success. We got to know each other better, Colin Keir MSP welcomed us, we sang with Penny Stone, listen to poetry, watched Annie and her brilliant puppetry show “Peaces of History” had some tea and cake and called it a day at 9 pm when we all got back to get a well deserved sleep.

Today we are walking from Currie to Bathgate, 18 long miles ahead. If you wish to see more photos an news about the Spring Walk please visit www.springwalk.org

If you wish to support the walkers and want to see a Nuclear Weapons Free Scotland please join us on the way, at the evening gatherings and please come on Saturday 5th of April, at the March and Rally in George Square. Meet us there at 10.30.  Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Lesley Riddoch (Broadcaster and journalist), Rev Sally Foster Fulton (Church of Scotland), Dave Moxham (STUC), Sadie Docherty (Glasgow Lord Provost) and Martha Wardrop (Vice-Convenor, Scottish Green Party) we’ll be there at the Rally.
