Glasgow CND - Opposing wars of empire

We would like to invite you to attend our forthcoming conference entitled 'World War 1: opposing wars of empire then and now'. The opening session will be '1914-2014 - a century of militarism and war'. Another session will examine the current situation in the Asia-Pacific region under the title 'the US pivot to Asia and the encirclement of China'. A third session will consider 'Venezuela - a case study in destabilisation'. We have three outstanding speakers - Kate Hudson (general secretary of CND), Jenny Clegg (author of a recent book on China) and Neil Findlay MSP (last year attended the presidential elections in Venezuela as an international observer).

The conference will take place on Saturday 5 July from 10.30am to 1.30pm in the Renfield Centre, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow. The conference will hopefully provide some relief from an extavagant programme of official events which attempt to glorify World War 1 as a necessary war to resist German militarism.

I do hope you can manage to attend this important event.

Please see leaflet here.

Victoria Park Peace Tree

Scottish CND - West End Festival Parade

Scottish CND is joining the West End Festival Parade (Sat, 9th of June) and we need volunteers to help us create the artwork and to  take part in the parade.

The project aims to spread the enthusiasm, hope and express our desire for a peaceful and nuclear weapons free Scotland. The paraders will create a happy sea scenario where a Trident submarine is transformed in a peace messenger (with flowers, doves and colors) and all the sea creatures (fish, jell fish, crabs) are happily enjoying a truly safe and peaceful life. For photos with some ideas please check here.

Glasgow West CND report 1 October 2010

Glasgow West CND meets monthly in a local pub. We held a successful Hiroshima Day event at the peace tree in Kelvingrove Park on 6th August with around 50 in attendance. Speakers included Drew McFarlane from EQUITY, Martha Wardrop of the Green Party and a song from Arthur Johnston. We also provided an evening meal for the Peace Walkers on the same evening (see picture). We have a joint public meeting planned for 29th September with the STUC entitled ‘There is a better Way’ which calls for spending money on providing jobs and meeting social need rather than Trident. We continue to maintain a presence on the streets with regular leafletting and a literature stall on Saturdays. We are currently working with students from Glasgow University to help create a local CND group on the campus.
