Description

Though over 50 years old and shot in black and white, Peter Watkins' 1966 Academy Award winning nuclear attack documentary 'The War Game' remains a key film in galvanising debate on vital political and social questions of our time.

As part of the ESRC's Festival of Social Sciences, GCU are delighted to be hosting an event based on the research of Professor John Cook from GCU's Glasgow School for Business and Society into the notorious BBC/Government banning of the film from British TV for 20 years.

There will be a 45 minutes film screening of 'The War Game' followed by a Q&A panel discussion session to discuss the relationship of the film to key social and political questions of today such as media power, censorship and the continuing presence of nuclear weapons. The event coincides with the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament's (Scottish CND)'s 60th anniversary and will also include an exhibition and refreshments.

The event is free and open to the general public aged 16 and over, as well as to senior school pupils and college and university students studying politics, modern studied, history, social sciences and media.

'The War Game' film is rated 12 by the British Board of Film Classification. The film contains graphic images simulating the effects of nuclear war which some viewers may find shocking or upsetting.
