Hiroshima Education Pack

Scottish CND has produced a free Education Pack to raise awareness of the sixtieth anniversaries (in 2005) of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This pack has been developed with the kind assistance of Mrs Irene Morrison, Chair of the Modern Studies Association and Subject Co-ordinator for Modern Studies in the Social Studies Education Division at the Jordanhill campus of Strathclyde University, who says, ‘The teaching and learning materials produced by Scottish CND are very suitable for secondary pupils at all stages and in many different curricular areas. SCND have used the Education for Citizenship document to benchmark the various activities. It is not only social subjects but other areas such as physics and maths as well as English that can use the materials. I hope you will pick and mix the materials and enjoy carrying out the varied active learning activities. The pupils will learn a lot but no more so than to question what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki 60 years ago.’

As indicated in Mrs Morrison’s endorsement, the pack will offer a range of challenging activities for pupils at a number of stages from S1 - S6, with supporting visual and information material. VEIW

All the suggested activities are open-ended and can be adapted to suit the needs of the teacher and the class.

The activities can be fitted into a number of curricular areas, e.g.

Modern Studies/Geography/History
Education for Citizenship (all activities can be linked closely to the objectives of Education for Citizenship by looking at the enclosed Annex A and B of the Education for Citizenship Framework Paper produced by the Advisory Council for Learning and Teaching Scotland and the cross-references to it made in the Teachers' Notes)

The material could also be adapted for many other subject areas, particularly in mathematics and the sciences.

  1. 5 lesson plans designed for Citizenship (with cross reference to History, English and IT) on Presentation, Nuclear Weapons and International Relations with sample question sheet and role play cards
  2. 4 Then and Now posters (black and white), linking the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to present day developments in nuclear weapons. For thumbnail images click here
  3. Collection of black and white photographs of the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with information on the bombings of the two cities
  4. A list of nuclear websites
  5. Teachers' Notes
  6. Copies of Annex A and Annex B of the Education for Citizenship paper
  7. CD-ROM with SCND texts listed above
  8. Countdown to Hiroshima CD-ROM with highlighted texts listed above and visual images

*Suggestions for activities based on this material are given in the Teacher's Notes or on separate sheets.
