HMS Vulcan

There is a prototype of the reactor used to power British Trident nuclear submarines at Dounreay. It is identical to the reactors used on submarines and is called the PWR2. This is a British design developed from an early US Westinghouse submarine reactor design.

The first fuel core has been run at the reactor and it is currently being defuelled and refuelled (May 98)

This is the now the only working reactor at the Dounreay site.

Scottish CND has produced a report which examines the safety of the whole Trident system.

Dounreay
