Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

What you can do

Here are twelve things you can do about the current military crisis:

1. Wear a ribbon in support of the Palestinian people
Let other people know you support the Palestinian people and provoke discussion about what is happening, buy five and sell them to your friends and family, they cost £1 each and can be ordered from the Palestinian Rights Campaign c/o the Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War

2. Boycott Israeli goods
Don't buy JAFFA oranges, grapefruits and lemons, CARMEL avocadoes, dates, salads, vegetables and herbs, DELTA GALIL clothing supplied to Marks & Spencer, GAP, Calvin Klein & Hugo Bross. Check your bar-codes - any product with a bar code starting with 729 was produced in Israel. More details from Emilie@assilem.waitrose.com or 0131 556 2429.

3. Wear the badge
Support the campaign for No More War, you can order a free badge to wear from www.banthebomb.org or buy one from the Scottish Coalition

4. Write, fax or e-mail letters to your MP
MP's take notice of their mail-bag. Write to your MP expressing your opinion. You can write to them c/o the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA. A draft letter can be found on the website. A list of Scottish MP's email addresses can be found at www.banthebomb.org/news/2001b/MPwar2.htm or you can find their fax number using your postcode at www.faxyourmp.com

5. Support the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine
International observers have played a crucial role in limiting Israeli violence. They have been escorting ambulances through Israeli checkpoints, delivering food, reporting what they've seen and holding non-violent protests. It costs less than £200 to fly to Israel, so go there now for as long as you can during the summer break. You can register to join them and find out more at www.rapproachement.org or email uksolidarity@yahoo.co.uk

6. Collect signatures on the petition
The Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War petition calls for Blair and Bush not to extend military action against any other country; to honour their commitment to establish a viable Palestinian state and to pledge not to use tactical nuclear weapons. Get your friends, workmates and family to sign it.

7. Sign the Pledge to support or take part in nonviolent civil disobedience in the event of an attack on Iraq
In the event of a major attack on Iraq the Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War is calling people to do at least one of three things:

  1. Support Tony Benn's call and take an hour off work, school or college and join city centre rallies and actions on the day an attack starts;
  2. Join town and city-centre vigils from 5pm on the same day;
  3. On the Saturday following the start of an attack join the non-violent sit-down protest in the centre of Glasgow. Assemble in George Square at midday. We want as many people as possible to sign the pledge to take action: "I pledge to take part in non-violent civil disobedience in the event of a major US/UK attack on Iraq or any other country in the course of the 'war on terrorism'." You can sign the pledge to take part in civil disobedience or sign it as a supporter.
