Peace Vigil & Rally George Square 8 October
Peace organisations, political parties, trade unions and church organisations in the Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War will come together tonight in peace vigils and rallies in town centres across Scotland from 5pm. They will be calling for an immediate end to military action against Afghanistan and for a diplomatic solution to be found for the crisis. Rallies are being held in: George Square, Glasgow Parliament Square, Edinburgh Castlegate, Aberdeen All the vigils will start at 5pm and will finish around 7pm.
Scottish CND as part of the anti-war coalition has drawn up of a 'telephone and e-mail tree' to spread the call for a immediate response to the start of the US military action. Volunteers are busy in their Glasgow office answering phone calls from concerned members of the public and phoning round the hundreds of people who have said they want more information.
Alan MacKinnon chair of the Coalition commented: "We have been getting an unbelievable response from the public. It is clear that the majority of people do not want any more innocent people to be killed after the tragic events on 11th September. We must end this tit for tat. We must break the spiral of violence. Bin Laddan must be brought to justice but through international law, not by using cruise missiles and stealth bombers against one of the poorest countries of the world." There will be several speakers at the Glasgow rally this evening including Aamer Anwar, a human rights lawyer, councillor Bashir Mann and the SSP environement spokesperson Rosie Kane.
