Before the convoy arrived Scottish CND sent a fax to the Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police informing him of the decision reached by Sheriff Gimlett in the recent trial in Greenock. It was made clear that he would be deploying his officers in support of a criminal activity. While travelling through Central police area, around Stirling there were in fact substantially more police deployed than usual. Two CND cars tracking the convoy were stopped at this point by Police. It was explained to them that what they were doing was equivalent to providing a police escort to a bank robber on his way to rob a bank.
As the convoy approached Balloch, near Loch Lomond, it was stopped by protesters standing in the road as the lorries slowed down near a roundabout. Most of those involved were from Faslane Peace Camp. Some crawled underneath the lorries, others on top of them. Brian Quail of Scottish CND stood on the roof of the cab of one of the lorries.
One peace camper managed to lock himself on underneath a lorry. The military fire crew which escort the convoy appeared on the scene to try to cut him off, using a hydraulic cutter. But this was unsuccesful. Strathclyde Police then appeared with similar equipment and eventually managed to remove him. The convoy was delayed for around half an hour.
The protest was coordinated by Nukewatch and a nukewatch spokesperson said:
"Once again the police are ignoring the real criminals and taking into custody citizens who are upholding international law."
Video footage of the protest, taken by Scottish CND, was shown on the STV evening news.
