TRIDENT ON TRIAL

The legality of nuclear weapons in Scotland will be considered when a crucial case comes before the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday 30th June. Brian Quail, Joint Secretary of Scottish CND, appealed against his conviction for trying to cut the fence at Faslane during a Trident Ploughshares protest last year. This appeal will be heard on Wednesday. The issue at stake is whether the local court was correct when the JP ruled that "the intricacies of international law are in this case of no direct interest to this court".

Anti-nuclear campaigners will be gathering at the National Gallery on the Mound at 10 am and walking up to the High Court adjacent to St Giles. They will have a presence outside the Court from 10.30 am until the case is concluded. We will have placards and banners saying "Scottish Judges must Ban the Bomb" and "Put Trident on Trial". Please join us if you can.

This hearing will take place on the day before the Scottish Parliament opens. The Court sits next to the old Scottish Parliament Hall. Several Members of the Scottish Parliament have been invited to support our vigil outside the Court.
