Trident convoy stopped

On Sunday 18th October a Trident nuclear warhead convoy was stopped near Garelochead as it approached its destination, the Coulport nuclear depot. Protesters from Faslane Peace Camp stood in the road and brought the vehicles to a halt. There were three warhead carriers plus a massive military and police escort.

A total of 7 peace campers were arrested, 5 were charged with Breach of the Peace and 2 with Obstruction.

When the convoy headed down South on its return journey it was stopped again near Newcastle. On Tuesday 21st October members of Tyneside Action for People and Planet and CND. The vehicles were stopped for 30 minutes. Military Police had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to release one demonstrator who was locked on to a warhead carrier.

The current situation appears to be that all the Trident warheads have been built and transported to Coulport. The government has made it clear that no Trident warheads will be dismantled following the recent Strategic Defence Review. The recent movements are probably due to warheads being taken to and from AWE Burghfield near Reading for surveillance and inspection.
