Over 200 CND supporters took part in a demonstration against the launch of the fourth Trident submarine, Vengeance at Barrow in Furness on Saturday 19th September. A total of 12 people were arrested earlier in the day, 11 of them were from Faslane Peace Camp in Scotland. 5 of the Peace Campers managed to get inside the shipyard before the submarine was launched. A further 6 were arrested outside the site. The Campers were all released later on Saturday evening.
Also Lindis Percy was handled very roughly during her arrest. She had driven in her car to the workers car park in the site during the night. In the morning Police arrived and threatened to smash her windscreen and spray in CS gas. When she offered to get out of her car she was told to stay in it. A forklift truck was used to roughly lift the car, with Lindis still inside, and it was moved away. She was detained until Sunday afternoon and charged with vagrancy.
Lindis had been due to join CND Vice President Bruce Kent and 3 others on a citizens war crimes inspection. This went ahead at 10.30 am on Saturday, while she was in custody.
Vengeance is due to sail to Scotland early in 1999, probably in February or March.
