For the second time in a week Trident Ploughshares protesters donned wet suits and swam into the Trident area of the Faslane nuclear submarine base. In the early hours of 17th August Krista van Velzen from the Netherlands and Katri Silvonen from Finland swam for one and a half hours across the ice-cold Gareloch to breach security at the site. They were carrying hammers, bolt-cutters and sirup which they intended to use to disarm the Trident submarine, HMS Vigilant, which was moored at berth 12. They reached close to the Shiplift which overlooks the berth and were close to the submarine when they were detained by Ministry of Defence police in patrol boats.
Twenty year old Katri said: "If they send me to join the three other women in a Scottish jail, I can only state that they arrest the wrong people. We as citizens have the legal obligation to stop the preparation of crimes against humanity under the UN approved Nuremberg Charter.
Krista, added: " We have no doubt that this Ploughshares movement is going to force Westminster to fullfil its obligations under Article VI of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by the year 2000. Neither the people of the UK, nor the international community, want these costly weapons of mass destruction. It is time to invest this waste of money and resources into meeting the real needs of society."
Rick Springer has written an account of the first Swim to Trident.
