A total of five people broke into the Trident submarine base at Faslane on the night of Monday 30th March. Four people broke in at 10 pm. Three were returned to the Peace Camp and one was arrested and detained. A fifth peace camper climbed onto the razor wire on the fence and was detained then released.
The action was carried out as part of an inspection looking for illegal weapons of mass destruction which are believed to be held on the site.
A group called International Weapons Inspectorate (Scotland) was set up by Scottish CND, Faslane Peace Camp and Nukewatch. They wrote to Admiral Gregory, Commander of the Clyde Naval Base, telling him that they were coming to carry out an inspection. The base replied saying they would not cooperate with our request.
Around 50 people took part in a citizens inspection on Friday 27th March. First we gathered on the beach near the Peace Camp and formally sent off four canoeists who headed off to carry out an inspection from the sea. The main group then walked the length of the base to the North Gate. We told a Ministry of Defence Police Officer that we had told the Admiral we were coming and wanted access because we believed that weapons of mass destruction were being hidden inside the site. The Officer said that he had been told by his superior officers not to let us in.
Those taking part in the inspection saw a number of large buildings and facilities surrounded by high security fencing, with armed security guards. They also saw one Trident submarine berthed at the Finger Jetty. They came to the conclusion that there were clear signs that weapons of mass destruction were being concealed inside the site.
Faslane Peace Camp eviction is expected to be decided at a hearing in Dumbarton Sheriff Court at 10.45 am on Wednesday 1st April.
