All British nuclear weapon in Scotland(25/3/98)

In response to a question from an SNP MP the government has now admitted that, as from 1st April, all operational British nuclear weapons will be based in Scotland.

Mrs. Ewing: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of operational British nuclear weapons will be based in Scotland, including those on vessels based in Scotland, from 1 April.

Dr. Reid: With the withdrawal from service of the WE-177 free fall nuclear bombs the UK's only nuclear deterrent capability will be provided by the Trident force operating from the Clyde Naval Base. The infrastructure to support the provision of nuclear warheads for our minimum deterrent is based at various locations in both Scotland and England.
