MEDICAL AID FOR IRAQI CHILDREN SEIZED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT (11 Feb 98)

HM Customs yesterday seized antibiotics and antiseptic creams which were being taken by two British peace activists to Iraq. Milan Rai and Martin Thomas told the DTI on Monday that they would be deliberately breaking UN sanctions by taking medical aid to childrens hospitals in Iraq. It was only when they arrived in Amman, Jordan, that they discovered that their cases had been opened at Heathrow Airport. Inside was a note saying:

supplies in boxes have been removed by HM Customs, with a phone number 0181 910 3800

The boxes contained some of the medical aid. They intend to purchase further medicines in Jordan before proceeding. The two British have been joined by six American peace activists.

This is a cruel act which was deliberately designed to prevent peace activists from delivering antibiotics to children who are sick. What sort of government is it that takes medicines away from children ? said Brian Quail, Joint Secretary, Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Scottish CND is asking people to attend a vigil against the bombing of Iraq which will be held on Wednesday 18th February from 5 pm to 6 pm in George Square, Glasgow.
