Tunnel stops nuclear convoy (9 Sep 97)

protest

Tunnelling techniques learnt at Manchester Airport and Gorlaben have been employed to halt a Trident nuclear weapons convoy. Three specially built lorries containing warheads for Trident missiles were travelling with a large escort across Scotland on the last leg of their journey from the nuclear weapon assembly plant at Burghfield in Berkshire.

The convoy was halted and alerted to the fact that the road ahead was impassible due to a tunnel only 50 feet from the entrance to Britain's nuclear store at Coulport. This particular approach to the base is not used by any other vehicles. Around thirty people took part in the protest and four were arrested. The convoy eventually moved off and used an alternative entrance into the nuclear base.

On its journey across Scotland the convoy travelled up the M74 then through the centre of Glasgow on the M8. The convoy crossed the Kingston Bridge in the centre of the city. This bridge is currently undergoing major repairs and over the next few months the whole massive bridge will be moved several inches to try to correct fundemental problems with the structure. A Scottish CND car which was following the convoy was astonished to find them using this route in these circumstances. A photo was taken of a similar convoy crossing Kingston bridge in July.

There had been a protest involving 15 women when the vehicles left Burghfield on Sunday morning when three women were arrested.
