The USS Rhode Island, a US Navy Trident submarine, arrived at the Faslane Naval Base in Scotland on 22nd August. As the submarine sailed up Gareloch two canoes from Faslane Peace Camp set out across the loch. The canoes were turned back by Police boats escorting the submarine.
Other visits by US Trident submarines to Faslane were by the USS Nebraska in May 1995 and the USS West Virginia in August 1996. The photograph below shows the USS West Virginia berthed at Faslane.
